Hi Guys.I want some ideas on how to mod my small car to increase power lower in the rev range. The car is a toyota Echo with the tiny 1.3l 2SZ-FE engine, an engine that’s usually modded for power at higher revs -and even then rather rarely- so there is basically no info out there for doing what i want to do.
I guess some of you are already thinking WTF? - as this kind of mod will inevitably reduce the already small amount of power the engine has!! To be honest though i’m completely happy to lose some top end in exchange for a smooth easy to use engine.

Also i want to do this on a budget!Obviously that means no turbos or massive swap-everything mods. Some fundamentals i already understand that could do this: Longer inlet tracts,ECU chip, longer exhaust runners, different valve timing(in,ex or both),less valve overlap,Compression, valve sizes etc

So my first thoughts are to try changing the valve timing and/or overlap as it costs nothing. Thoughts? Is this likely to screw up the injection and spark because the ECU is exactly tuned for the characteristics of this motor? Or do you think it will cope? Perhaps the MAF and O2 sensors will perfectly adapt to any changes i make?

... the unwritten rule for Oppo is that if you’re going to get high on drugs and post goofy stuff you need to bring enough of your stash to share with the group.

Just sell it and buy one with the 1.5. The 1.3 is a bit of a dog and isn't responsive when it comes to mods.

You’re not going to get any measurable amount of torque increase from an Echo engine. But if you really really want to dump money into an economy engine, I would start with a header - DC Sports should make one for the Yaris/Echo, and then I would look into cams. I don’t think you will be able to do anything with the timing, as it’s all electronically controlled and you have VVT-i on the engine.

The DC Sports header has good reviews for picking up low-end torque, and should install within an hour or two depending on your abilities. I would start there and see if it satisfies your needs.

That seems to be the running theme lately.

You can’t increase torque and not hp (Without major element changes like de-boring your engine and stroking...)

HP and torque go hand in hand. What you should do is look at mods and see where they help your engine, if its down low that is probably what you really want.

Like Party-vi said already, you’re really not going to see any measurable gains on that engine unless you do some of the more extreme stuff. A turbo would be the way to go. Stroking the engine would also be a good option. Also, don’t go with too large a diameter exhaust, as that will do the opposite of what you want.
